Fuming Muriatic Acid is another name for concentrated Hydrochloric Acid which is approximately 36% to 40%.  This material is also known as Fuming Hydrochloric Acid, and Fuming HCl although they are essentially the same material.

Fuming Muriatic Acid has many uses in industry such as in steel-making where it effectively removes rust from metals and in food preparation and production, where it is used in the canning process and in the manufacture of corn syrups and soft drinks.

Fuming Muriatic Acid is highly 'Corrosive' and can cause severe burns to skin and eyes, possibly causing long-term or permanent damage.  The fumes are 'Corrosive' and will attack the respiratory system, nasal passages and mucous membranes in the nose and throat.  High concentrations of vapours or fumes may cause severe burns to mouth, throat and stomach.

fuming muriatic acidFuming Hydrochloric Acid should always be handled under fume extraction or if there is insufficient extraction, respiratory equipment should always be used.  Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should include splash-proof overalls, rubber gloves, protective safety shoes or boots and approved safety goggles.  If there is a risk of splashing, a face-shield should be worn.  If handling large amounts of product, use either a rubber or plastic apron or alternatively wear a full protective suit to minimise risk.

Legal requirements govern the packaging, labelling and transporting of Fuming Muriatic Acid.  Above Limited Quantity Size of one litre, Fuming Muriatic Acid must be transported according to ADR Regulations using approved packaging materials.  These will either be plastic or glass contained within cardboard packaging. The packaging must carry the UN approved markings and must be marked indelibly with the UN Number for the material.

Spillages of Fuming Muriatic Acid can be treated in a number of ways:-

  • absorb with inert material, such as sand, earth or other inert absorbant
  • neutralise the material with soda ash
  • large spillages should be dammed to prevent spreading
  • it is important to prevent spillages from entering drains, sewers and water systems

If it is unsafe to treat, Emergency Services must be contacted immediately to assist with the spillage.  If any Fuming Muriatic Acid enters the waterways, the Environment Agency or other similar regulatory body should be informed immediately.

Spillages of Fuming Muriatic Acid may have an ecological effect on aquatic organisms as it may affect the pH of the water.
